testimonials

  • Disclaimer: As a 23andMe customer, I can verify I have either very little or no Eastern European heritage (1.2% Broadly European). That being said, I always keep an open mind and empty stomach when it comes to trying cuisines from other cultures. Oky Doky was a restaurant I had been stalking for months, patiently waiting for its grand opening to get my hands on some sweet, sweet Ukrainian dishes.

So Oky Doky is fascinating. The inside is beautifully decorated and their staff is just as colorful and lively as their decor. The owners are Sal and Inna Ramos of Mexican and Eastern European background, respectively. The menu is eclectic and there's a little something-something for everyone.

In retrospect, it's actually quite genius. San Antonio has a plethora of Mexican restaurants. But how many can say they can also serve you a bowl of Borsht? The Mexican food? Familiar. Comforting. But stick around and try the Okroshka. It's a Russian soup served cold and has buttermilk, potato, eggs, and lots of veggies like cucumbers and red onions. Also, if you're going to do the Eastern European food, I hope you like dill. It's in EVERYTHING (SO GOOD).

ANYHOO, Alexis was my server and she was phenomenal. She was the one who suggested the Okroshka, and to add ham to it. She first brought out a dinner roll and some butter (with dill) and it was very yummy. The soup was perfect for hot weather. I remembered halfway I was lactose intolerant but I couldn't stop eating it because it was so delicious. I had asked to sample their dumplings since I knew I couldn't handle a full serving. So I was delighted when they let me have a taste of the Pelmeni dumpling. They served mine in broth and they urged me to try it with sour cream and holy moly. Amazing.

Oky Doky also has a robust alcohol menu, serving up beer and an impressive selection of cocktails. And, embracing the Mexican heritage, multiple flavors of Tres Leches cakes.

This spot has a little something for everyone--whether you want something familiar like Mexican food, or try something out of your comfort zone like Russian and Ukrainian dishes. Either way, the staff is happy to see you, and by the time I left, I felt like part of their family. I can't WAIT to go back!-Cynthia T

  • Found this place on Yelp, one look at their puffy tacos and I was sold! They did not disappoint. Their prices are very affordable. Staff is friendly, they even brought water to the playground area for us after we had finished our meals and cashed out. Their Ukrainian menu looks delicious planning on trying their Regina's Chicken next. - Mia D.

  • This place has a wide variety of food! Seems good, reasonably priced happy hour and great staff. They even have a playground too just for kids. There's a seating area outside to watch after them as they play too. I would highly recommend this place. There might be mosquitos (because it is Texas after all) so I'll say that with a fair warning. Otherwise seems like a good place. - Karina R.

  • We went to Oky Doky over the weekend to scope out the Eastern European food (though to be fair, with the other options, this is a place where there's something for everyone). All of it was incredible and worthy of future visits, but the hands-down best was the German Sauerkraut!

The Vareniki was a yummy take on Polish pierogies. The chicken Shaslik was tender, and the Pelmeni was a spicy version of wonton soup. The tiramisu was delicious!

The small versions of these plates are great if you have a small appetite...or if you want to try a few different plates.

We're looking forward to coming back and trying some other dishes, including the chicken rolls!-Christi L
