Adolfo, my great-grandfather, holds a very special place in our hearts.
Don* Adolfo Ramos Ybarra, was the youngest of six siblings. Born in 1894, he grew up in Lagunillas, a town in San Luis Potosí, México. His life, in the Mexican countryside at the turn of the 20th Century was devoted to hard work. From the time he was a small child, he worked the land and brought to market the hard-won fruits of his labor. His family owned thousands of acres of cornfields and hundreds of heads of livestock; cows, goats, pigs, and chickens. In his early years, he and his family had to endure the social and financial upheavals of the Mexican Revolution and the Cristero Rebellion. Although his family suffered tremendous loses, they were able to recover through their efforts and hard work. Don Adolfo lived to the ripe age of 96, thanks in large part, to his healthy lifestyle and his sweet temperament. Throughout his long life, he earned the respect and admiration of his community. He was known to be an honest, hard-working man, well versed in many subjects, despite the lack of access to education so common in those days. My great-grandfather, Adolfo, was a learned, pious and fair man. He made sure to instill in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren high ethical and moral standards of which we are still very proud of in my family.
*In Spanish the appellative Don is not a proper name, but rather a respectful form of address used before the name of a man held in high standing. The feminine equivalent is Doña.
