about this business

Our HistorySam Grossinger arrived as an immigrant from Europe during his life as a young boy. As was the case with most immigrants during this time, his family was poor. However, what Sam Grossinger lacked in finances he made up for in determination and perseverance for success in this great country of opportunity. He began as a tailor in a sweatshop and then became a partner in a parking garage. Finally, he became a franchised new vehicle dealer for a brand called "Hupmobile."  This franchise did not prove successful, but Sam's perseverance and business acumen got him noticed by the leadership of General Motors and namely, Pontiac Motor Division. It was then Sam Grossinger opened up Grossinger Pontiac in 1934 on Lawrence Avenue in Chicago and he was one of the original Pontiac dealers in the country. Amongst those with whom he worked, Sam Grossinger became known for his shy smile, the whisper like silence of his voice and his stern, forceful manner when necessary. He was highly principled, very driven and 100% committed to growing his business through his determination to service his customers. He realized that in a commoditized business such as automobiles that it was customer treatment that was going to lead to the business' ultimate success. Sam had two sons, Irwin and Paul, who grew up in and around the dealership. As a result, they developed a work ethic and mode of operating much like their father. Paul was the oldest son and soon developed to become Sam's right hand man. Irwin came on later and they managed dealership operations together. Their close relationship and mutual respect was apparent and the boys worked well together while they assisted in growing the family's business. Sam Grossinger passed away in 1964 and left the business to his two sons. The two Grossinger Sons, Paul and Irwin, ran the Pontiac dealership together until Paul Grossinger died at the very young age of 44. Both of these losses devastated Irwin and although he had been dealt a bad hand he continued to grow the family's business legacy for which he felt so fortunate. In February of 1980, Irwin moved the business to Skokie, Illinois. During the ensuing years, opportunity knocked on Irwin's door many times and he grew the business to include more vehicle franchises and locations including Lincolnwood, Chicago and Palatine. The portfolio of vehicle franchises at that time included Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC Truck, Suzuki, Volvo and, of course, Pontiac. As the years passed, Irwin welcomed his children into the family's business. Two of his three children, Gary and Caroline, became actively involved in running day to day operations as they worked to learn and hone their skills under their mentor. Irwin passed along his strong work ethic, business acumen and importance of his never ending commitment to separate the company by providing outstanding customer service. Irwin Grossinger passed away in June of 2000 and left his children to carry on the family's legacy with the same strength of character and same mutual admiration for one another as their family before them. In the recent years, Gary and Caroline have continued to grow the business. During the years of 2008-2010 they opened three more dealerships: Chicago's largest dealership, Grossinger City Toyota, Scion, Cadillac, Chevrolet in Lincoln Park, and Grossinger Hyundai and Grossinger Kia in Lincolnwood. They both continue to attribute this fortunate growth to their long standing employee base that is able to maintain and grow the huge base of repeat and referral clients. In summary, this third generation family owned and operated auto group is committed to growth of its operations by developing trust and loyalty in both its customers and employees.
