First Step Learning Center PSL

First Step offers quality education for preschool aged children, ages 3 -5 years old. The focus of the programs at First Step is to foster the development of the “whole child”- social, emotional, cognitive & physical development. Each classroom is designed to support children in their pursuit of learning and the programs include activities such as sensory experiences (water table, sand etc.), art explorations, scientific discoveries, exploring emotions and building friendships and music and movement.

In addition to strengthening socialization skills -- how to compromise, be respectful of others, and problem-solve -- First Step provides a place where your child can gain a sense of self, explore, play with peers, and build confidence. Our curriculum is developed by our experienced staff of early childhood professionals and is guided by standards of developmentally appropriate practice. Our teachers use many resources to plan our curriculum including, but not limited to, Sing, Spell, Read and Write, HMH curriculum, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s (NAEYC) accreditation standards as a frame work for excellence in programming, health and safety standards.

First Step is dedicated to supporting children and their families. The partnerships that we build with children and their families are the core of our program. As teachers, we truly value the parent-teacher relationship and see it as a way to develop the program to better meet each child’s needs. We encourage parent volunteers and are working on ways to provide additional opportunities for parents to become more involved in our program.

Our program is designed to create independent students and our teachers are focused on readying them for Kindergarten. Students will become more familiar with the alphabet, numbers, sight words, math, science and more. They will gain confidence in communicating their needs. With the natural curiosity of a preschooler, it is important to create meaningful and engaging investigations and learning activities. Using discovery to develop each student’s abilities, our teachers guide them to reach objectives, allowing them to be successful in a classroom environment. This is a great way to combine play and skill building opportunities.

Many of our 3 and 4 year olds are full time staying from 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM. The wrap around program is the perfect complement to our morning preschool schedule. It gives your child quality social and educational opportunities outside of his or her morning format. There are limited spaces to allow our teachers time to engage our students even more.
