C.S. Lewis once said "Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important."
Is this your view of your faith?...You became a Christian a long time ago, you pray when you need to and you stay out of trouble...so you and God are good? The problem is, that our faith is far too importnat to have to have this kind of casual attitude about it. This kind of mindset leads to a lukewarm or even cold Christian and that is not God's desire for our relationship with him.
Do you believe in God...but don't go to church? Are you spiritual, but refuse to go to church because it's too commercialized and is only interested in your money. Maybe you believe that churches are full of hypocrites...people who live one way on Sunday, but completely different the rest of the week.
Truthfully, I wish I didn't have to say that yes, sometimes these things do happen. Some churches do get off track and lose their focus. Sometimes they base success on their bank accounts and attendance numbers and not on what really matters. And yes, you will always find some people at church who live two lives...their church life and their home life.
But here is the thing. You should never let these things or a casual attitude about faith keep you from looking for a place to worship or from pursuing a deeper relationship with God. And while these things do happen from time to time at churches, they are usually the exception and not the rule. So if you have had a bad experience (or two) or if you have not given your spiritual life the importance it needed, I want to encourage you to keep searching for a church where you can grow in your relationship with God and not be distracted by their shortcomings (and they all have some shortcomings...no church is perfect, nor are the people who go there).
Some of the things that you should look for in a church is, 1. A church that teaches and preaches the Bible, 2. A place that promotes genuine worship and 3. A place that after some prayer and meditation, is where you feel God wants you to be.
If you are ready to start looking for a church, where you can grow in your beliefs, then I want to invite you to come and expereince worship at Covenant Baptist Church. I can't promise you that we are the perfect church for you, but I can promise you that we teach and preach God's Word (the Bible), and we do everything we can to promote and encourage genuine worship.
We are not a mega church, in fact we are quite small in size. Our services aren't filled with lots of lights, sound and video... Sometimes we sing hymns with just a piano and sometimes we sing praise & worship and have several musicians...We aren't a large, high tech church...instead, we feel much more like home and we treat each other like family...but most of all, we focus on God and our relationship with Him!
