As I type, I am just shy of two weeks since my initial infusion. I sit here in no notable pain despite a long day and approaching storms (one of my sure-fire triggers). I have felt so much better that I need to remind myself to take things easy, so as not to completely exhaust myself. I am hopeful and excited to see how much my quality of life continues to improve! I haven’t felt this well since I was a teenager. If anyone has even a speck of interest in this game-changing therapy, please don’t wait another day before you call. If you’re at the end of your rope like me, what do you have to lose? But what if you get your life back?
I found out about Revitalist after Jenn and Katie had an informative lunch with my brother. I was diagnosed with migraine disease around age 12. My migraines became chronic (15+ days a month), intractable (does not satisfactorily respond to conventional treatment) in my early 20s. I will be 30 in a few weeks so for over half my life I have suffered from debilitating, and recently disabling, migraine attacks. I have tried, and failed, an impressive number of medications over the years- triptans caused severe cardiac reactions, most pain medications caused rebound headaches, and the rainbow of preventive medications either didn’t help at all or the relief they provided didn’t outweigh the side effects. I tried alternative therapies such as acupuncture and chiropractic with some relief, but the results were short-lived. My headache specialist told me that he would be doing me a disservice if he continued to prescribe pills and began to discuss the heavy-hitters of Botox for Chronic Migraine and the new CGRP class of medications that are in final-stage trials. Botox has always scared me, but I was to the point that I was willing to do just about anything for some relief. The CGRP drugs are still months away and that’s too long to wait when you’re miserable.
I scheduled a consult with Jenn for a Monday afternoon. My mom and I made the nearly 100 mile trip and were very impressed with what we found. The office atmosphere is very peaceful and inviting. There are essential oils diffusing throughout and you just feel at home. Jenn and Katie are incredibly enthusiastic about the opportunity to share the benefits of Ketamine infusions with their community. Jenn met with us for nearly an hour, explaining the process, discussing some of the research findings, answering all our questions, and showing us around. We discussed a treatment plan that would meet both my health needs and my long-distance travel. I made the appointment for my first infusion for that Wednesday.
I walked in with my typical White Coat Syndrome but relaxed quickly. After the first treatment, I noticed on the ride home that my anxiety was tolerable. I wasn’t as easily agitated that evening. I encountered some moderate nausea that evening and a migraine attack with a pain level of 9. I took medication and used an ice pack and was able to sleep. We added some anti-nausea medication during the third infusion and it helped tremendously. After treatment I felt the beginning of a migraine so I drank a cup of coffee. One cup kept it at bay. My pain level never rose above a 2 and it never became a migraine. The day following my third consecutive infusion was the first “real life” test of efficacy. I had a very busy day and was able to complete all my tasks with virtually no head pain, despite several sure-fire triggers being present. I was able to enjoy my entire weekend without significant impact from migraine. As I completed my treatments, I continued to see improvements. I was even able to sleep 7 straight hours one night on my brother’s loveseat. I typically wake every hour or so, even in my bed.
My main reason for pursuing treatment with Revitalist was to find migraine relief, of course. I have also dealt with depression and anxiety since childhood, both of which have only worsened with age and neither of which have been very responsive to treatment. As a wonderful bonus, I have seen remarkable improvement in my symptoms. My anxiety hasn’t crippled me and I have been able to more easily center myself when I feel it beginning to fester. My treatments finished on the first anniversary of a devastating loss and I was able to make it through the day without breaking down. Depression hasn’t kept me in bed once since beginning Ketamine infusions, compared to mostly not leaving my home for the two weeks prior.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
...as did the researchers, doctors, psychiatrists, and these wonderful Nurse Anesthetists at Revitalist.
I fell in a hole this past winter. A hole deeper and darker than any I’d ever previously descended. Somehow, in that darkness, I stumbled across an ad for Revitalist. Picture a cartoon question mark over a cartoon depressed person. Or the sound Scooby-Doo makes when questioning something (Aruh?). At any rate, it was a tiny light in a very dark place. So I followed it - I took the road less traveled.
In all my 30+ years of managing situational depression, never have I experienced a resolution of symptoms as I did with my treatments with Ketamine at Revitalist. Bit by bit, treatment by treatment, the lights started coming on, the colors slowly moved back into view, my body started wanting to move, and I found myself engaging in my life again. The day following my fifth treatment, I felt like a gopher popping his head up out of his little gopher hole - now cue the “I’m Alright” Caddyshack soundtrack.
So, six sessions and I’m all good, thanks to Jenn and Katie and their compassion and courage to see the need of so many, to see the treatment potentials, and to see they had the skill, vision and strength to bring it to us.
Ladies, if you need more or different, let me know. I’d do anything to support this treatment and Revitalist!
Gratitude and hugs- G
My struggle with chronic pain began in October 2014. I suffered a right brachial plexus nerve injury accompanied by Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (a.k.a. Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) in my right arm and hand. The pain was so severe, constant, and disabling that it affected my personal, professional, and social life. In efforts to obtain pain control, I worked with multiple doctors including Neurosurgeons, Neurologists, Pain Management physicians (Anesthesiologists Fellowship Trained in Pain Management), and Physical Therapists. I had a cervical fusion to remove impingement of the nerves; nine months of physical therapy, multiple medications (that I could not tolerate), several nerve blocks and stellate ganglion blocks, amniotic tissue transfers, and Lidocaine infusions. None of these treatments eased my pain. I was beginning to lose hope that I would ever achieve relief of pain or return to a normal life.
I continued working with my anesthesiologist pain physician. There were only two things that we had not tried: Ketamine Infusion Therapy or a Spinal Cord Stimulator. I scheduled a Spinal Cord Stimulator trial but also discussed Ketamine Infusion Therapy in detail. I researched Ketamine Infusion Therapy for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and read all of the medical literature to date. I found that there was strong evidence supporting this treatment and patients were getting pain relief. I decided to try this before proceeding forward with the Spinal Cord Stimulator trial.
Revitalist is a Ketamine Infusion Clinic located in Knoxville, TN operated by Board Certified CRNAs Katie Walker and Jenn Hultz. I discussed the protocol driven therapy in detail with Katie Walker and decided to proceed. I completed one week of Ketamine Infusion Therapy and my pain has decreased significantly. Before treatment, my pain was an eight on a scale of one to ten. Now, my pain is a two on the pain scale. I was very comfortable throughout the entire process. The clinic is a relaxing medical spa type environment, and I felt safe knowing that medical professionals with experience in the use of Ketamine were monitoring me.
I greatly appreciate how the providers at Revitalist worked and continue to work in collaboration with my medical providers to help create and manage the best treatment plan for myself and my resistant condition.
This has been a journey that has lasted more than three years. I am so pleased with my results that I cancelled the Spinal Cord Stimulator trial. I finally have hope of regaining normalcy in my life. I would highly recommend this therapy to others suffering from chronic pain conditions.
